Saturday Night Live season 43 wrapped up in May 2018. The show has become synonymous with comedy sketches that range in topic from political to other news and celebrity entertainment. Highlights include return of fan-favorite Alec Baldwin and other surprise star guests.
While Saturday Night Live season 43 was ripe with Donald Trump parodies as Baldwin offered up his rock-solid impression of the president, there were a plethora of amazing hosts such as Gal Gadot, Kumail Nanjiani, Donald Glover, Sterling K Brown, and sooooo many more.
Featured players such as Mikey Day, Alex Moffat, and Melissa Villasenor were perfect complements to the main cast members who, of course, include Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, Pete Davidson, Leslie Jones, Keenan Thompson, and so many more that we’ve grown to love.
That being said, let’s get to counting down our five favorite hosts of Saturday Night Live season 43. Ready?
5: Chance the Rapper
Saturday Night Live Season 43, Episode 6 — November 18, 2017
Chance the Rapper hosts this episode that smartly talks about a common criticism of Batman and his crime-fighting style — his violent war on crime is probably not welcome by the residents in the communities he over patrols. It’s a satirical look at things about Batman that are obvious but often overlooked.
He also portrayed Steve Harvey’s surprise love child on a skit that was set on a Thanksgiving episode of Family Feud. It turns out that Aidy Bryant’s character was a former lover of Harvey’s, and as a result she has one child that turned out exactly like Steve Harvey.
4: Chadwick Boseman
Saturday Night Live Season 43, Episode 17 — April 7, 2018
Chadwick Boseman plays T’Challa (or the character more commonly known as Black Panther) and in this sketch, he plays a wise and respectful leader. He is asked several questions and answers them positively and respectfully but not quite the way viewers would expect.
For instance, when asked why the cable bill is in grandma’s name, he responds that he guesses it’s in her name to indicate her importance in the family and honor and respect her memory. However, the correct answer is that the bill is in her name because she’s likely to die soon and won’t need the good credit anyway.
The Black Jeopardy theme is actually a recurring one in Saturday Night Live’s Seasons with fresh but deep jokes centering on race-related issues.
3: Ryan Gosling
Saturday Night Live Season 43, Episode 1 — September 30, 2017
Written by SNL writer Julio Torres, “Papyrus” emphasizes host Ryan Gosling’s fixation on the font for James Cameron’s block buster movie “Avatar.” In this sketch, we see Ryan Gosling explaining to his therapist – Kate McKinnon why the font for the movie gnaws at him.
Apparently, he is so upset by the font that he describes the graphic designer responsible for the font as “like a thoughtless child just wandering by a garden and yanking leaves along the way.” Sadly, his therapist adds to his pain by nervously letting him know that there are more Avatar movies coming, each one with the same “Papyrus” font. Ryan Gosling manages to pull off this sketch and turn it into a parody of conspiracy thrillers.
He also joins in a recurring sketch that features Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong all about alien abductions. Gosling can be seen almost losing it multiple times as Kate’s character describes her awful abduction experience that pales in comparison to the other two characters. Possibly one of the funniest recurring skits on SNL at the moment!
2: Donald Glover
Saturday Night Live Season 43, Episode 19 — May 5, 2018
Donald Glover is absolutely everywhere right now. Taking the country by storm as his rapper alter ego Childish Gambino, starring in the newest installment of the Star Wars story as Lando in Solo, and of course creating and starring in his own hit TV show on FX Atlanta.
On top of all that, he rolled through Saturday Night Live in season 43 and absolutely crushed it, acting as both the host and the musical performer. This is also the same night he dropped his brand new single & video This Is America, which you can currently find sitting at 328 million views on YouTube and still counting up every day.
A plethora of stars appeared on this episode, including Alec Baldwin, Ben Stiller, Scarlett Johanssen, Jimmy Fallon, Martin Short, Stormy Daniels, Zoe Kravitz, and Daniel Kaluuya. Skits included the Wiretap Cold Open, the meeting of all the black people in space, a pre-recorded FRIENDOS skit with A$AP Rocky, and many more.
Please bring back Donny G immediately, amirite?!
1: John Mulaney
Saturday Night Live Season 43, Episode 18 — April 14, 2018
John Mulaney was a writer for Saturday Night Live for six seasons, from 2008 until 2013. The script for the “Diner Lobster” sketch on this episode was actually written by Mulaney back in 2010 with Colin Jost, but it didn’t make the cut at the time. Thank God it made it on the air for this episode, because it was one of the funniest things of the whole night. The entire cast just about lost it in the middle of this sketch that was mimicking the style of Les Miserables, a flat-out musical that ensues after Pete Davidson’s character orders a lobster from a diner.
Mulaney was our favorite pick of the season, and it can’t be a coincidence that some of the funniest stuff all season came from a former SNL writer.
So there you have it! Our top five hosts from Saturday Night Live’s epic season 43. How do these fall in line with your feelings on the season? Let us know who your favorites were!
Season 44 is slated to premiere this fall, and we absolutely can’t wait.
