Childish Gambino. Summer Pack. That’s about all you need to know. End of article.
Okay, just kidding. But seriously, did you see and hear Childish Gambino’s new songs on Facebook and YouTube on July 11th? Just when you thought his stock couldn’t rise any higher, the newest actor to play Lando Calrssian dropped a pair of brand new tracks just in time for all your summer parties, barbecues, poolside hangs, and PCH cruising.
These two songs are much different from his last single release This Is America, which is his absolutely brilliant commentary on black culture and gun violence in America today. These new songs are much more laid back, sultry, smooth, and have no rap in them whatsoever.
Childish Gambino can really do it all. Let’s dive in.
Full of steel drums, slow beats, lyrics professing his love for a special someone in summertime, this jam is perfect for grabbing a drink, laying out by the pool with your significant other, and catching some sun. As we all know, summertime really can be full of magic, especially when it’s spent with someone you love. “Do love me, do love me, do” is the most repeated line throughout the entire song, which really sums up the whole track.
Soft and sultry, this takes us back to Gambino’s Kauai EP from 2014, which was his first real departure from the rapper we’d all become familiar with in 2011’s Camp and 2013’s Because the Internet. Donald Glover can do it all — he can rap, he can sing, he can swoon, and we damn well know he can act.
Feels Like Summer
Just as laid back as Summertime Magic, this track feels a lot like cruising down the highway with the windows rolled down, the bass turned up, enjoying the warm breeze on your face. Unlike the first song, the lyrical content in this one seems to be more focused on slowing life down a bit, taking more time to “smell the roses” per se, and making a change in this great big world we live in.
Mixed with plenty of social commentary in the most subtle and brilliant way, lines like “Every day gets hotter than the one before / Running out of water it’s about to go down” play off of climate change and how we’re slowly destroying the beautiful planet we live in. Donald Glover is known for his clever lyrics, always able to navigate around topics with beautiful prose and subtlety.
Take a listen to both songs and see what you think for yourself. Summer Pack also begs more questions: will there be an Autumn Pack on the horizon in a few months? Are these songs, along with This Is America, going to end up on his last album together? Is he just going to release single after single until he has a whole album’s worth of songs?
At any rate, I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next. There’s no telling what type of music his next song will be, as his genres are kind of all over the place, but he still pulls every single one of them off with ease.
Summer Pack is available on all your favorite streaming platforms now, as well as your favorite places to buy music. Catch Childish Gambino on his This Is America Tour this fall!
